Robbie dropped Ronnie off first, making certain she got inside and had power before he got back onto the road, what they could see of it, and turned toward Lindseyâs home. The plows were out, moving slowly along the road, creating huge drifts on the curb as they tried to stay ahead of the storm.
âHow long is it supposed to snow?â Lindsey asked.
âAll night,â Robbie said. âThe front should move out to sea by morning.â
Lindsey glanced at her phone. Morning was a long way away. Robbie pulled up to her house. Theyâd left a light on, so she knew she had power.
âWhat are you going to do now?â he asked.
âIâm going to call Emma and tell her what we suspect,â she said.
âI can do that for you,â he offered. âIâm headed back to the inn. Her police cruiser canât handle this weather, and even if she plans to spend the night there to keep watch on the suspects, I donât want her stuck there without an exit strategy.â
âYouâre a good boyfriend,â Lindsey said. He smiled. âThen I guess Iâm going to call Sullyâs parents and let them know whatâs happening.â
âThatâs a tough call to make,â Robbie said.
âIf it was me, Iâd want to know,â she said.
âTrue.â He patted her shoulder. âWeâll find him and heâll be all right.â
Lindsey gave him a fleeting smile and then said, âBe careful and stay in touch.â
âYou as well,â he said. âDo not even think about going out in this without proper transportation. Promise me.â
âI promise,â she said. She opened her door and stepped back out into the biting wind and snow. The headlights of Robbieâs car illuminated the way until the motion-sensitive light by the front door snapped on. Lindsey took out her keys and unlocked the door, pulling it open and bracing herself for Heathcliffâs exuberant greeting.
She turned and waved to Robbie and watched as he slowly backed his car down the driveway and turned onto the road. She was standing in the doorway but Heathcliff didnât appear. She let the door swing shut.
âHeathcliff!â she cried. She heard a low woof sound from down the hallway. Sheâd left the lights on in the living room, and a quick glance showed nothing amiss in the house. She walked down the hallway from where the noise had come.
Their cozy cape house had three bedrooms, the main one, which she shared with Sully, and then two others, which theyâd made into a guest room and a home office. She followed the sound of Heathcliffâs huffing noises into the office. She switched on the light by the door, and the overhead lamp snapped on, illuminating the room. Zelda was sprawled across the top of the desk while Heathcliff was on his dog bed in the corner.
âHey, buddy,â Lindsey said. âNo hello? Are you feeling all right?â
She crossed the room and noticed that he had something on his bed. She reached down and pulled it out from under his paws. It was Sullyâs sweatshirt, the one he usually threw on for early morning walks on the beach with Heathcliff.
